Talented Heart Research Institute (HRI) bioengineer Dr Steven Wise is taking up an exciting opportunity to further his innovative research program with the HRI’s close collaborative partner The University of Sydney (USYD).
The HRI extends its congratulations to Dr Wise and members of his Applied Materials Group who will be moving their work to the Charles Perkins Centre at USYD at the end of June.
“This is a thrilling opportunity for Steve and his team to continue their good work, and we wish him all the best,” says HRI Director of Cardiovascular Research Professor Shaun Jackson. “As a medical researcher, you are on a continual, collaborative journey, often across multiple institutes and countries. Rarely do the best researchers reside in one location for the majority of their careers."
Since opening its doors 30 years ago, HRI has become a breeding ground for top scientific talent, with HRI alumni now holding positions of influence throughout scientific and medical fields.
Dr Wise’s move is yet more evidence of the Institute’s ability to develop sought-after scientific talent, the Director says. “It’s a testament to HRI’s commitment to developing and supporting top talent, that Steve has been able to progress in this manner.”
Dr Wise’s recent funding success, including NHMRC project, NHMRC development and ARC Linkage grants, demonstrates the quality of his research program and has laid the foundations for his move to USYD.
Dr Wise also won high praise for a recent project completed under the mentorship of HRI’s senior research team. The work to develop new synthetic conduits for arterial revascularisation received the 2018 NHMRC Marshall and Warren Award recognising the most innovative project that could change the way a disease is diagnosed, treated or prevented.
While Dr Wise will no longer be based at HRI in Eliza Street, he will not be lost to the Camperdown research precinct, or to HRI research teams. “He will continue to collaborate with other HRI Groups, including Dr Anna Waterhouse on their two joint research grants,” Professor Jackson says.
