The Heart Research Institute’s Scientific Director and CEO Prof Andrew Coats AO has been recognised as Australia’s top researcher in cardiology for the second year running.
The accolade was given by The Australian newspaper in its annual special report, the 2024 Research Magazine.
The report celebrates the country’s top researchers and research institutions in 250 fields of research, including health and medical sciences.
The recognition of Prof Coats as Australia’s top researcher in cardiology was determined by a detailed analysis to come up with his “impact score” – the highest number of citations by researchers for papers published in the top 20 journals in cardiology over the past five years.
The impact score takes into account both the quality of the research (by examining only top journals in the field) and the impact of the research (judged by the number of citations).
On being named, Prof Coats said, “Australia is very strong, relative to size, in all research areas, but in health and medical research in particular, so it is indeed a great honour to receive this accolade.
"There are many strengths in Australia in cardiology research, and I am proud to be part of the team at the Heart Research Institute and in its partner cardiology research entities in Australia.”
“We are home to some of the world’s most brilliant researchers and the most cutting-edge research,” Federal Education Minister Jason Clare said in the magazine’s foreword.
It is the sixth year that The Australian has offered this unique view of the research landscape.
